€500 million to make Lisbon more sustainable

Project “Lisboa Solar” foresees the production of electricity for self-consumption in public and private buildings.

The case involved a car imported from Germany with CO2 emissions of 44g/km and a range in electric mode of 45-48km.

The new mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas has several plans for Lisbon, and one of them is to make the city more sustainable.

For this, the mayor has created “Lisboa Solar”, a project that is part of the Great Options of the 2022-2026 Plan (GOP) which provides, among other things, for the production of electricity for self-consumption in public and private buildings. This is a project worth around €500 million, representing 36.3% of the total investment planned until 2026.

The objective of this project – which includes a Photovoltaic Power Station in Carnide, scheduled for completion in December 2024 – is to take advantage of the city’s solar potential, namely through the installation of “Production Units for Self-Consumption (UPAC) in the parks of buildings and municipal equipment, to satisfy part of the current energy needs”, according to a report by Diário de Notícias.

The plan also intends to “promote the installation of solar systems (thermal, photovoltaic and hybrid) for heating sanitary hot water and producing electricity for self-consumption in residential, service and commercial buildings, public and private, prioritising schools and social housing buildings.”

The Lisbon City Council also wants to renew the city’s public lighting network, implementing solutions for remote management, flow regulation and replacement of luminaires for LED technology, expanding “the network of electric vehicle charging stations, covering all parishes in the county, and contemplating fast, ultra-fast stations and charging hubs for private electric vehicles, with intelligent management (load management, operation and demand)”, redesigning problematic bike lanes, or even expanding the network of urban gardens.
