Responding to the invitation of haute couture brand Dior, Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos unveiled her monumental Valkyrie sculpture during the women’s collection fashion show for the autumn/winter 2023-2024 season held in Paris.
Titled “Valkyrie Miss Dior”, the sculpture is unique in that it incorporates fabrics used in this collection, marking the first time the artist has applied such materials to her Valkyrie sculptures.
Joana Vasconcelos’ Valkyries are large structures with multiple arms, inspired by Scandinavian myth in which women chosen by Odin were tasked with selecting and accompanying the bravest warriors after death.
Weighing over a ton and composed of 20 different fabric patterns provided by Dior, “Valkyrie Miss Dior” was installed at the Jardin des Tuileries, where a catwalk was set up to showcase the sculpture.
