International tourists double

In January, external markets totalled 2.3 million overnight stays, doubling the total number of overnight stays in January 2022, according to the latest data from the National Statistics Institute (INE).

In January, national tourist accommodation establishments accounted for 1.5 million guests and 3.5 million overnight stays, values that reflect growth of 72.5% and 74.5%, respectively, compared to the same month of last year, with emphasis on the external markets, which totalled 2.3 million overnight stays, doubling the total number of overnight stays in January 2022, according to the most recent data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

In terms of external markets, the highlight in January was the British market, which accounted for 14.8% of total overnight stays from non residents, followed by the German and Spanish markets, with shares of 11.3% and 10.2%, respectively.

INE indicates that, in January, increases were common to all segments of accommodation, with overnight stays in hotels, which represented 81.9% of the total, growing 77.1% compared to the same month of 2022 and 2.7% compared to January 2020. Overnight stays in Local Accommodation, whose share was 15.6%, grew 71.2% compared to January 2022 and 25.3% compared to January 2020, while overnight stays in tourism in rural and housing spaces, which had a share of 2.5%, grew 28.1% compared to January 2022 and 45.8% compared to January 2020.
