Swedish group Ikea is pondering over investing in a solar park in Portugal as part of its sustainability drive and to meet ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) criteria.

This is according to the news source Jornal Económico who interviewed its CFO in Portugal, Ricardo Pereira.

“We have been evaluating the possibilities of expanding our wind farms or expanding solar parks and we are very interested. We know that Portugal is among the countries in Europe with most sun and it has a long coastline. We have been studying solar parks within the group and would really like to invest”, he said.

But “nothing has been firmed up”, he said. The possible project is part of the group’s medium-term investment strategy.

“We are a company that is responsible and serious about sustainability … In the long term, the big concerns are always sustainability and climate change.”

Ikea employs 2,800 staff in Portugal and expects to continue regular recruitment, particularly for warehouse logistics and the new warehouse it is building in Loures.
